Nestled in the Tulbagh Valley 120km Northeast of Cape Town, shaped like an inverted horseshoe and surrounded by mountains on either side is Saronsberg Wine Estate. Saronsberg was originally part of Twee Jonge Gezellen, which was then divided between the 2 Krone brothers in the 1950s and known as Waveren and Welgegund. In 2002 Saronsberg was purchased by Nick Van Huyssteen and renamed after the Saronsberg mountain slopes it occupies. The tasting room is beautifully flanked by majestic oak trees, a picturesque dam and of course the amphitheatre of surrounding mountains. Find a space inside the cool interior that is home to contemporary South African art pieces, or outside under the trees on the lush grass. They have 1 tasting whereby you choose 9 different wines, which includes the likes of Cap Classique, Sauvignon Blanc, Chenin Blanc, Shiraz, Rhone Blend or Rosé. As their motto says: Nature Meets Art Meets Wine is beautifully put. The estate is both child and dog friendly. Unfortunately, no restaurant or platters. The Saronsberg Vineyard Cottages are a must for this region, all self-catering with enchanting mountain views. Farm activities like scenic hikes, mountain biking trails and bird watching will keep you busy before settling down with a glass of wine to enjoy.
