Opstal Wine Estate is situated in the picturesque Slanghoek Valley with Rawsonville our nearest town. Stretching from the Badsberg mountains in the east of the valley to the Slanghoek mountains in the west, we have great diversity in terroir. The farm has been family owned and run since 1847 and the current operational duo of Zak and Attie Louw are the 7th generation descendants of JC ‘Lang Jan’ Rossouw, the first owner of “De Opstal bij de Fonteine”.
The Opstal Team is on a journey towards ever purer site expression. We are known for all things Chenin and the Carl Everson Single Vineyard Chenin blanc has won multiple awards and gained a reputation as one of South Africa’s best.
Attie and Zak Louw’s goal remains to offer friends, family and guests an estate experience like no other. With guidance from 6th generation Stanley and Ria Louw, the Opstal Experience includes a restaurant, wine tasting and wedding venue. What is more, we introduced Opstal Stay in July 2019. Located on a working wine farm just one hour’s drive from Cape Town, Opstal Stay is your perfect escape inland of the Boland Mountains.
Opstal has a wide range of quality estate wines under three different labels: The fun, easy drinking and pocket-friendly Sixpence Range; the classical and food-friendly Estate Range; and the premium Heritage Range with our multiple 5-star Platter award winning Carl Everson Chenin blanc the cream of the crop.
Our winemaking philosophy is centered around site identity and drinkability. We aim to proclaim our beautiful Slanghoek soil through our wines and at the end of the day, we strive to make the wine drinking experience for our customers as relaxed and enjoyable as possible.
Looking back over 7 generations we have truly come a long way. At Opstal we strive to keep a forward-thinking mindset though, in every aspect of our business.
