The Flagstone winemaking operation started in 1999 in a run-down shell of an old depot in Cape Town harbour – it was South Africa’s first urban winery.
In 2002, our production outgrew the location and Flagstone moved to an old dynamite factory in Somerset West. With thick walls and huge doors to get equipment in and out, this has proved to be an ideal location and all of our Flagstone wines are made here.
Flagstone is a winemaker-driven wine business, rather than a marketing-led business. This means we first do what is right for the grapes and the wine and only then worry about how to sell the gorgeous stuff.
Flagstone’s Head Winemaker, Gerhard Swart, believes that one should never stagnate, “You always have to be thinking about how you can stand out from the crowd. Be it more interesting labels, varieties or, like we do at Flagstone, combining particular terroirs to create wines that are intriguing and unique”.
Our core supplying vineyards under management stretch from the southernmost wine growing area in South Africa, Elim, to one of the most easterly vineyard sites high in the Swartberg Mountains to the Breede River valley, north of Cape Town.
While our construction team is getting creative updating our cellar door’s new look, we will be temporarily stationed a mere 80m down the road.
