Backsberg Family Wines has been around for over 100 years, with four generations of South African Jewish family ownership. The beautiful tasting room overlooks the Mont Rochelle mountains and Franschhoek valley. The tasting centre was built around a piece of history – a century year old tractor brought with from the original estate. Backsberg places a huge importance on sustainability (actually one of the first certified carbon neutral wineries in South Africa in 2006) and have used old barrels and wood chips to create lighting, furniture and design elements. The outside section is fabulous with a spectacular view, while the inside sections are just as gorgeous with colourful design elements and a warm fire. There have 4 tastings available and some very interesting pairings to try. They have a grazing platter or other small plates to nibble on. Backsberg is also one of the few producers who make Kosher wine, making these vegan, Mevushal and Kosher for Passover.
