Hugging the banks of the Breede River is Viljoensdrift Wine Estate, with a heritage of winemaking that dates back to 1818. Five generations of Viljoens have produced wines here and today brothers Fred and Manie Viljoen carry this proud tradition on.
This wine tasting is a little different, as you can experience a relaxing boat trip on the peaceful waters of the Breede River. The deli is jammed packed with all sorts of goodies to create a gourmet picnic, grab a bottle of wine and you are all set for your cruise on the flat-bottomed river boat affectionately named Uncle Ben 2. The boat cruise lasts 50 minutes and departs daily on the hour. Bookings are essential as it fills up very quickly.
The Viljoensdrift team create 3 different wine ranges to appeal to a diverse wine audience, and most of them at very affordable prices. These include the Cellarmaster’s Selection, their Flagship River Grandeur or the easy-drinking Viljoensdrift Range. There is a tasting area inside, but the outside deck that overlooks the river is ideal to taste through any 4 wines. A very relaxed and unhurried tasting, either before or after your cruise.

Tanagra is an idyllic working wine farm close to McGregor, offering comfortable accommodation in well appointed guest cottages, produce handcrafted wines and stylish Grappa and Eau de Vie. An old wild fig tree gave the farm its name, ‘Tanagra’ – it echoes the Khoisan expression for a well-shaded place. This giant tree canopies the historic homestead and winery, providing welcoming shade during the hot days of summer. Tanagra farms sustainably and is a WWF Conservation Champion. Guests are welcome to explore the various trails on the farm and come for a tasting of the wines and spirits produced on the estate. Agri- and eco tourism at its best!
Say Zandvliet and it’ll echo ‘Shiraz’. Being one of the very first wineries in the country to bottle this noble cultivar, this wine estate on the outskirts of the Robertson Valley Wine Route, combines time-honoured tradition with modern-day expertise to produce pure luxury in a glass. All of the Zandvliet wines are of the kind we ourselves drink and admire. You’ll find artisan handcrafted and cellar matured wines, so feel free to enjoy them now or savour at a later occasion.

“Robertson Winery’s Tasting Room have moved to a new location! 4-6 Voortrekker Road Robertson. Join us at our newly renovated tasting room!
The idea was to create a relaxed wine tasting environment where the main attraction stays focused on the RW wines. Interchangeable tables and seating were selected to shift this space according to everyday functional requirements. Probably the most sheltered stoep in all of Robertson. In summer, picture lazy al fresco gatherings here and in winter snuggle up in front of the large fireplace. Of course we did not forget to take your children into account. Since we had limited space, the only way was upwards. Feel free to take a photo for social media at our signature RW climbing structure. Our aim is that you truly experience the Robertson Winery hospitality when visiting and that it becomes a place where you would want to share it with your loved ones, because ultimately we have more to share. Also now available is a large cheeseplatter to enjoy with your wine or create your own basket with biltong, droewors, chillibites, panini bread and more to choose from.”
With careful selection of the best terroir for each cultivar we have the opportunity to make wine with minimal intervention and to extract the best quality juice. Meticulous care is taken throughout the year to ensure that what we harvest is the best version of each cultivar. October 2021 Salóme Buys-Vermeulen received the very prestigious award: Women Winemaker of the year 2021.
