That Wine Demesne is a tiny owner-run wine farm 20km outside of the popular coastal town of Plettenberg Bay. Rising above the steep slopes of the Buffels River gorge, this single vintage vineyard has been producing a still Pinot Noir since 2016, expanding from that first field planting of 1308 to a total of 5708 by 2018 on one & half hectares. There is a romance about tilling the soil, working the land, being one with the elements and this cautionary tale should send a warning that once started, it is likely to become an obsession. The neat, long rows of plants have an almost infinite variety of wants and needs and they respond so well to the right treatment and so badly to the wrong treatment that relationships develop with each block, each lane, even each plant.

Pinot Noir has a seductive delicacy. It is an exciting, sensuous drink that can be ravishing. Some Pinots are so complex that they seem to have a personality, like a person. If you look at a map of the earth, you will see that the places which grow Pinot Noir are all similar distances from the equator. They all lie on the outer limits of the areas which produce most of the world’s wine. Kind of “marginal land”.
How do you pronounce it and what does it mean? Demesne: di’mein, di’mi:n – “The Lord’s waste”. A piece of land attached to the manor and retained by the owner for their own use.
